Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ Before You Book
A short list of direct questions that tell you more than any sales pitch will.
The right questions, asked upfront, save you from surprises later. Here's what we'd ask if we were booking a DJ for our own wedding.
Experience & Logistics
How many weddings have you done?Ask for a rough number and how many were at your specific venue, if possible.
Who is actually DJing my wedding?Confirm the specific person, not just the company name.
What time do you arrive to set up?Good DJs build in buffer time before your first scheduled moment.
Do you handle ceremony sound too? Some DJs only do receptions — confirm ceremony mic and music are included.
Music & Personalization
How do we share our music preferences?Look for a real planning process — a form, a call, or both.
Can we give a do-not-play list? This should be a standard, respected part of planning.
How do you handle guest requests?Ask how they balance requests against keeping the floor full.
Can you MC in a style that fits us?Formal, low-key, high-energy — your MC's tone should match your vision.
Equipment & Backup Plans
What happens if equipment fails?Ask specifically about backup speakers and microphones.
Do you bring your own lighting?Confirm what's included versus what's an add-on.
Is your equipment insured?Relevant for venues with strict vendor requirements.
Contract & Payment
What's your retainer and balance schedule?Get this in writing, including due dates.
What's your cancellation/rescheduling policy?Especially important given how far out weddings are booked.
Do you charge travel fees?Ask upfront if your venue is outside their core service area.
