How to Choose a Wedding DJ
Your DJ runs more of your wedding day than any other vendor. Here's how to find the right one.
Of every vendor at your wedding, your DJ has the most control over how the day actually feels — the pacing, the energy, the moments that get announced and the ones that flow quietly by. Choosing well matters more than most couples realize until the day is happening.
What to actually evaluate
A DJ with strong reviews on Google, WeddingWire, and The Knot has a track record that's harder to fake than a curated testimonials page. Look for consistency across dozens or hundreds of real weddings, not just a handful of quotes.
Ask directly how they handle announcements, timeline changes, and keeping guests informed. Playing songs and running a room are different skills — you want both.
Ask what happens if a speaker or wireless mic fails mid-ceremony. A professional DJ travels with backup gear as a matter of course.
You should get an actual planning meeting or detailed questionnaire well before your date — not a booking form you fill out once and never discuss again.
Most venues require vendor liability insurance. Confirm your DJ carries it, and get everything — price, hours, equipment, cancellation terms — in writing.
Ask specifically who is showing up on your wedding day. Some companies book a name you like and send someone else.
Red flags worth taking seriously
The cheapest DJ is rarely the best value once you factor in what a mishandled timeline, a dead mic, or a DJ who can't read the room actually costs you on the one day you don't get to redo.
